School. 1899. Possibly by M. O. Tarbotton. Accrington and blue
brick with ashlar and terra-cotta dressings. Gabled Westmorland
slate roof. Chamfered plinth and sill band. Shouldered coped
gables with kneelers. 2 ridge, 2 roof and single side wall
stacks. Single and 2 storeys, 3 bays wide by 6 bays deep.
Windows are glazing bar sashes and casements. Bell tower, 2
parallel classroom ranges, adjoining service buildings. Street
front has to left, bell tower, 2 stages, with string courses and
4 pairs of battered corner buttresses. Above, 4 domed turrets.
Above again, slated octagonal spire with cupola with leaded
pagoda roof and large dragon wind vane. To street, doorcase
with segmental pediment and mullioned overlight. In return angle
to left, paired casement. Above, on each side, a narrower
casement. Above again on each side, 3 casements. To left of
tower, single storey wing with 3 casements. To right of tower, 2
gabled wings, that to right stepped forward. Left wing has 4
light mullioned and transomed sashes with traceried semi-circular
head. Flanked by single transomed sashes with segmental heads.
Above, a central light. Smaller wing to right has similar
fenestration with 3 central sashes. Playground side, to west,
has central projecting double gabled bay. Each bay has a
mullioned and transomed sash flanked by single sashes. Beyond, a
single sash. Above, on each side, an arch topped dormer with a
casement. Rear elevation has 2 gables, that to right projecting.
To left, mullioned and transomed sash flanked by single smaller
sashes. To right, similar fenestration with triple central sash.
East front has projecting gabled wing to right. To left, railed
cellar opening and to its right, 3 sashes. To right again,
projecting bay, raised C20, with metal casement. Flanked by 2
small casements. Wing to right has a large sash. Above and
behind, classroom range has to left, flat roofed dormer. To
right, 2 large gabled dormers each with 2 casements. Interior
has no notable architectural features.
