The Dowes House and
2.9.86 Home Farmhouse

Farmhouse, now divided. C16 origins, the existing building is C17, altered in the
mid Cl9. Rubble with Cotswold stone roofs. Irregular plan, roughly L-shaped. The
west range (Dowes House) 2 storeys and gables, the right-hand one with ashlar
chimney. 1:3:1 windows irregular, 2 gabled dormers to centre part, French casements
to ground floor right gable, rebated surround to former mullion window to left-hand
gable; the principal feature is an ashlar chimney to right of centre: it serves the
right-hand wing and has a gable at a different angle to the main roof. The left-
hand wing (to north) has mullioned windows on return fronts. East front: again the
main feature is the chimney at the base of which is a rounded projection for the
stairs. The east range is a long range hipped to left-hand side with irregular
gables to south and mullioned windows. It formerly housed the dairy and domestic
quarters of Dowes House (formerly called Upper Farmhouse).
