Cottage, now field shelter. Probably C16 with C18 and mid to late
C19 alterations. Timber-framed of cruck construction on uncoursed
sandstone rubble plinth with red brick nogging, partly rebuilt in
uncoursed sandstone rubble and red brick; corrugated-iron roof over
thatch. Two framed bays; Two room baffle-entry plan. One storey and
gable-lit attic. Framing: square panels, two from sole plate to
wall plate. Central brick ridge stack. North front: blocked C17
or C18 two-light window to left and later blocked window to right;
central boarded door with later door to right; left-hand gable end
rebuilt in C18 brick, with boarded attic and ground-floor stable-type
door to left (top leaf missing); right-hand gable end rebuilt in
sandstone rubble with 2-light wooden casements to ground floor and
attic; rear: right-hand part rebuilt in C19 brick with segmental-headed
wooden casement; base of large coursed sandstone rubble stack
projecting in centre with evidence of former lime-washing.

INTERIOR:
ground-floor room to west has chamfered spine beam with plain stops,
unchamfered joists, chamfered floor-plate with plain stops, and large
open fireplace with chamfered lintel and bread oven; ground-floor
room to east has chamfered spine beam and joists with plain stops;
central full-cruck truss (only blade to north and part of collar
visible, the southern blade might have been destroyed); roof with single
purlins and wind braces. The cottage might be a fragment of a larger
house and the stack and floors C17 insertions.
