Mile post. Early C19. Cast iron. A raised backplate is inscribed LONDON 40, above a canted hollow lower section inscribed READING (?)1 on the left side and NEWBURY 16 on the right. Stands against a wall which is not of special architectural or historic interest. Included as part of the street furniture of the old London to Bristol highway, manifesting its former importance as the main route to the west.
