15/86 The Old School
GV II
House, originally early C19 estate laundry for Erlestoke Park,
enlarged 1893 in conversion to village school. Rubble stone with
plain tile roofs, one and a half storeys. Earlier section, to
right, is in picturesque cottage style with semi-circular curved
front under large oversailing bargeboarded gable, triple casement
each floor, the lower window with reused carved keystone, possibly
Jacobean, the upper window with cambered head, raised keystone and
2 heavy corbels each side which support ends of timber bressumers
carrying gable stonework above. Outer ends of bressumers are
carried on long curved timber brackets from walls each side of bow.
East side lean-to. Ridge stack. Schoolroom to left has hipped
eaves roof with 3 metal vents on ridge. Front has long 3-light oak
mullion and transom window to left of door with tall overlight
reaching up to eaves. 4 cambered-head triple casement windows to
west side.
