kerbs at Merevale Hall
GV II
Terraces, steps and kerbs of parterre beds. The terraces to the north-east and
with staircase to the north-west were probably designed by Edward Blore or Henry
Clutton in the 1840s. The terrace, steps and 2 parterres to the south-east were
laid out by W.A. Nesfield c.1850. Sandstone ashlar. South-east terrace of 8 bays
has stone pedestals between each bay, supporting white stone vases with handles
on paired bearded heads and fluted stems; they were purchased from Drayton
Manor, Staffordshire c.1926. Fifth bay has a flight of steps, pedestals with
cartouches and 2 vases to each side. 2 parterre beds elaborate design on the
terrace have stone kerbs. All this forms part of a formal layout designed by
W.A. Nesfield, c.1850. Terraces to north-east and west have high retaining walls
and coped parapets. North-east side has outer staircase with Elizabethan style
arcaded balustrade. North-west side has lower central section with another
Drayton Manor vase to left and right.
