In the entry for:-
BREMHILL STANLEY
ST 97 SE
8/67 Old Abbey Farmhouse
II
the description should amended to read:-
Farmhouse. Late C16 or early C17, but reusing elements from an earlier
late medieval structure built on the edge of the former Cistercian abbey
complex at Stanley, founded in ll54; the abbey was granted to Sir Edward
Baynton at the Dissolution. In course of being restored at time of
survey (Dec 1992).
Built of limestone ruble with stone slate and Bridgewater tile roofs;
brick ridge stack (to lobby entrance), ashlar right end (south) stack
and collapsed brick north end stack. PLAN: of 6 bays, the 2 bays to
right having signs of smoke blackening to roof with 2 blocked entries to
right gable end (possibly to former services): rebuilt in the late C16
or early C17 as a 3-room lobby entrance plan.
2 storeys. 3-window south range has timber lintels over late C19
panelled door with bracketted hood, plank door to left and over window
openings; first floor has blocked 3-light wood mullioned window. To rear
are two one-light chamfered windows (one lighting stair at rear of
stack).
INTERIOR: 6-bay late medieval collar-truss roof with truncated tie
beams, 2 tiers of through purlins and some original windbracing.
Ground-floor room to right has chamfered bressumer to open fireplace,
the waney-edged beam being of later date and suggesting that this room
may have been originally open to the roof (which would excplain the
smoke blackening); the central ground-floor room has mutilated chamfered
bressumer to open fireplace and stop-chamfered beam with original
joists. Timber-framed wall, partly rebuilt in C19 brick, divides this
room from room to left which has chamfered beam with early type of
joisting.

8/67 Old Abbey Farmhouse

Farmhouse, possibly medieval, and C17, rubble stone with stone
slate and Bridgwater tile roof, brick ridge stack, ashlar south end
stack and collapsed brick north end stack. Two storeys. First
floor has three windows, set to left, formerly casements, over
ground floor triple casement, door and window. To right, a door
with hood on brackets and window. South end has two first floor
windows. Glazing entirely missing (1987). Rear has one stone-
framed single-light. Building is said to be medieval with thick
walls, wind braced roof with smoke blackening, but requires fuller
investigation. House adjoins the site of Stanley Abbey, a
Cistercian nunnery founded 1154.
