8/25 Group of three monuments in
churchyard south of south aisle
of Church of St Martin
GV II
Three chest tombs, C18, ashlar. From north:
a) Spackman monument, late C18, with baluster angles and large
bordered rectangular plaques each side. Moulded base and
capstone. East end inscription to Jacob Spackman.
b) Brome monument, adjoining a), early C18, with moulded base and
capstone, squat baluster angles, armorial west end and finely
lettered north side inscription to Ralph Brome died 1716.
South side inscription commemorating his benefactions.
c) Broome monument, to east of b), mid C18, similar in style with
moulded base and capstone and baluster angles. Scroll bordered
south plaque flanked by trumpetting putti on pedestals with
inscription to Ralph Broome of Nutthills. North inscription:
'Beneath this tomb the mortal part doth lie
Of him who did all Nations base defie
Just and upright he was to every man
And never failed to lend a helping hand
Unto the poor from round about's abode
He fed the hungry and the naked clothed
For such good deeds our Blessed Lord doth say
That he the giver will most surely pay'.
