Summerhouse in Italian Garden
north east of Manor House Hotel

Summerhouse, mid C19 reusing medieval fragments, ashlar with rubble
stone rear retaining wall, originally roofed. 3-sided front of
Perpendicular style stone arches, pierced cusped balustrading and
buttresses between carrying diagonally set carved pinnacles. One
section of balustrade and 2 pinnacles dismantled (1984). Rear
retaining wall to hillside is topped by mid C19 Gothic finial. A
garden ornament erected by G.P. Scrope as the centrepiece of the
formal garden, later, elaborated into an Italian Garden by E.C.
Lowndes.
