Description

HADLOW HIGH STREET (south side)
TQ 63 49
7/82 Gateway to Hadlow Castle
20.10.54

GV II*

Ornamental gateway to Hadlow Castle (q.v.). Circa 1820, probably by George
Ledwell Taylor who designed Hadlow Castle (q.v.). Cement-rendered brick.
Gateway is set back from the street facing north west and is built between the
contemporary North Lodge (q.v.) and South Lodge (q.v.). It is an impressive
triple arch with large central carriageway flanked by pedestrian gateways. It
is built in the same distinctive Gothick style as Hadlow Castle (q.v.).

All 3 arches are 2-centred with moulded arches, clustered shafts and moulded
capitals and each is surmounted by a tier of narrow lancets, moulded cornice
and crenellated parapet. The central arch is wider and taller, and is flanked
by buttresses with weathered offsets. Piers each end have taller panelled
buttresses and rise with steeply-pitched finials the tops of which have broken
off.
