12/216 The Dower House, Thurnham Hall
GV II
House, late C17th, altered C18th and late C19th. Brick with sandstone plinth
and dressings and slate roof. Adjoins the rear wing of Thurnham Hall (q.v.) 2
storeys. East wall has 2 string courses. On the ground floor are 4 sashed
windows with plain stone surrounds. On the 1st floor at the left is a blank
recess, and a sashed window with glazing bars and rebated and chamfered
surround. To its right is a Venetian window with glazing bars and Gothick
tracery. Further right are 4 sashed windows with glazing bars and plain stone
surrounds. Door, to right of 2nd ground-floor window, has glazed porch and
cyma-moulded surround. Chimneys to right of 1st and 2nd ground-floor windows
and on right-hand gable. The west wall has a drip course. On the ground
floor are 3 sashed windows with plain stone surrounds. On the 1st floor are 2
similar windows, the left-hand one flanked by blank recesses. Further right
are 3 rebated and chamfered cross windows, the outer ones blocked. To the
right of the middle one is a window with plain stone surround, round head, and
glazing bars with gothick tracery. Door to right of 2nd ground-floor window,
with chamfered surround. At the far right is a lean-to porch. Interior has
no exposed features of architectural interest. The hardwood roof trusses have
tie beams, light collars, and raking queen struts.
