Shops, formerly house. Late C14, 2 storey and timber framed and plastered.
Former 'H' plan hall house with hipped peg tile roofs to front and gable on rear
of S crosswing. N crosswing is very long and has gabled, slate roofed and
weatherboarded extension behind. The first floor of the front has 2 double hung
sash windows to each crosswing with a double hung sashed canted, oriel bay
window and single similar sash window in hall block. Ground floor has 2 C20
shopfronts (no. 24)an early C19 shopfront to No. 22 and a more original early
C19 shopfront to No. 20, with thin edge pilasters, painted timber stallrisers
and double entrance door. Coved eaves to front and lean-to extension on S end
with slate roof and single first floor double hung sash window. Fragments of
old pargetting on front. Interior reveals remains of elaborate and large hall-
house of the late C14 with 2 crosswings, steeply raking central tie beam with
moulded chamfers and top plates, elaborate crown posts over crosswings and
hall, with 4 way bracing and moulded capitals and bases. N crosswing shows
remains of end smoke bay that was open to the roof. Both crosswings were
formerly jettied. Timber cased yard pump to rear of 20.
