Formerly St Paul's Choir School. 1874 by F C Penrose. White brick, terracotta
and plaster with sgraffito decoration. 2 main storeys with 2 dormered storeys
in the roof; the long principal elevation to Carter Lane symmetrical below cornice level with a complex rhythm of shallow projecting bays of unequal width (abcd(aaa)dcba). The facade employs Renaissance elements including Venetian and round windows, round leaded doorways and niches, the ground floor openings all in with sgraffito decoration to the intervening wall surface, the 1st floor openings with terracotta surrounds, some pedimented, set in brickwork with plain brick panels of shallow projection. A continuous sgraffito frieze at 1st floor level with the legend MIHI AUTEM ABSIT GLORIARE, etc. The terminal bays (ab) are emphasized by deep bracketted cornices, the remaining bays having plain brick parapets with moulded copings. The entrance bay (b) at the east end has a parapet above the cornice and is surmounted by a tall lucerne with prominent pilastered surround and semi-circular pedimental head. Plainer return elevation to Dean's Court with frieze (continuing inscription) and bracketed cornice.
