Includes No 9 Old Broad Street. 1922 to 36 by Mewes and Davis. Large scale Italianate
classical building of Portland stone. Design based on that of Peruzzi's Massimi
Palace. Long, bowed elevation to Threadneedle Street. 4 main storeys plus recessed
attic and slated mansard. Ground floor with order of Doric pilasters between large
rectangular openings. Projecting arched entrances at centre and in end bays with
engaged columns; the central entrance with coupled columns and the arch breaking
into the entablature. Upper wall face rusticated. 1st floor windows balustraded
with engaged Ionic columns and cornice. Tripartite opening over main entrance
flanked by paired pilasters. Cartouche over carved with the bank's emblem. 2nd
floor windows with architrave surrounds and consoles supporting cornices. 3rd
floor windows framed by a slight architrave moulding double-crossetted at the corners
and with scroll ornament at the sides. Deep enriched crowning cornice. Rear elevation
to 9 Old Broad Street, 3 bays 3 main storeys. Channelled ground to ground floor
and mezzanine over. Arched openings to ground floor. Central 1st floor window
pedimented. Deep crowning cornice.
