South wing of 1770 by George Dance the Younger. Remainder by Sir John Soane.
1802. Wing, plain, contains dining room and billiard room, both in Adam style.
Central block, 2 storeys, 3 bays with grand detached Ionic order in Portland
stone, statues above. Ground storey windows, round headed double hung sashed.
Central entrance door with fanlight and radiating bars. Windowless attic
with roundels left and right. Square centre panel. Portland stone balustrade
above. Two storey, one bay wing right and single storey wing further right
projecting at end, Ionic pilasters, dentil cornice. This was Soane's own
country house 1801-11 and thus of great importance. The principal interiors
are the entrance hall, staircase, parlour and breakfast room, the latter 2
little altered. The garden front is also of interest. Three bays, with
incised pattend stone pilasters, 'Chinese' balcony screen, and balustraded
parapet.
