Description

TQ 16 SE KINGSTON-UPON-THAMES CHALKY LANE

5/5 Monk's Cottage

II

Later C16/earlier C17 timber-framed cottage with brick nogging. Pantiled roof.
Later additions at the rear. Perhaps originally a lobby entrance house. The ground
floor has been much altered and the original position of the front door can no
longer be seen but there is a central chimney stack with, behind it, a sealed-off 2
storey void which may have contained a stair - the present stair is C19. The roof
construction (visible in the gable ends) has tiebeams, collars and diminished
principals with through purlins trapped between the collars and the principals. The
chimney stack has two angle shafts. The roof is pantiled. Lean-to extension to the
left and a two-storey, pitched roofed addition at the rear.
