2.
Cottage. Circa 1600. Small C19 rear extension (scullery). Timber framed with
brick base, the exterior partly rendered and partly clad in C20 cement panels
with C20 timber battens. Old plain tiled roof, steeply pitched to eaves. 2
storeys. 2-cell house plan with substantial stack to south end (rebuilt at top)
and gable entrance to left of stack. Staircase rises between front and rear
rooms, reached by a door in rear room (now kitchen). Timber framed construction,
mainly plastered over, but clearly visible inside coal hole and to wall between
front and rear cells at both levels; corner posts and wall plates also visible;
exposed spine beam running north-south to each of ground floor rooms, chamfered
and stopped to parlour. Upper storey rises into roof; roof purlins visible only
beneath eaves, but many are original. 2 windows to upper floor retain original
oak surrounds, that to west side of south room with 2 original oak diamond mullions
and a surviving circa C18 wrought iron casement window hung between them; that
to east side of north room with one surviving original oak diamond mullion and
traces of further sawn off timber diamond mullion; also one surviving circa C18
wrought iron casement window. Other windows with C20 plate glass, the window
openings probably of original size. Simple C18 fireplace to parlour and horizontal
brass plate fixed below shelf. Early, probably original, vertical planked door
to south room on upper floor, with wrought iron hinges, latch and handle. Other
woodwork of circa late C18, including staircase door set in vertical boarded
timber wall, also circa late C18, and adjacent door to coal hole; both these doors,
and that to store beneath stairs and to door dividing parlour and kitchen, have
wrought iron hinges. Circa late C18 dresser with 3 shelves fixed to east wall
of kitchen. A good surviving example of a modest dwelling type now relatively
rare.
