Late C17 and early C18. Brown brick with red dressings. 5 storeys, 1:2:
3:2 double-hung sashes with flat arches. Projecting wings recessed left
hand centre. Excellent porch: Corinthian pilasters on plinths supporting
entablature and enclosing panelled Tuscan pilasters, elliptical arch with
keystone, side arches round-headed; 6-panel door with architrave and fanlight.
lst and 2nd floor bands, modillion cornice, old tile roof. Interior -
fine original panelling in hall and ground and 1st floor main rooms; staircase
has turned balusters and panelled dado with miniature Corinthian fluted
pilasters; ground floor South East room has excellent Adam style mantelpiece.
Vide CL LXXIX pl42 and RCHM. NMR. Fine wrought iron gate and screen,
gateposts with ball finial. Barbara Villiers, Duchess of Cleveland, may
have lived here, 1707-9. Daniel O'Connell lodged here for a few years
when a law student. Thackeray was educated at a school here, and Miss Pinkerton's
Academy in "Vanity Fair" may have been taken from Walpole House.

a group.
