GV II
Former vat house, now offices and stores. c.1800, though with a half-basement and
ground-floor remodelled c.1840s and later alterations. Stock brick with stone bands and copings.
Two storeys, attic and semi basement, the latter entered at ground level from two-storey
projecting rear. Symmetrical three-bay front to Brick Lane with blind ground-floor save for
inserted central six-panelled double doors in stone surround with console brackets and
pediment. Three round-arched tripartite metal windows over light the first floor and attic, the
latter containing the mechanism for the clock in the pediment, which rises over stone brackets
and iron tie-plates. Hexagonal cupola with weathervane.
The interior is remarkable for the forest of iron columns, with capitals, and I-section girders
inserted c.1840s. This is fully exposed in the semi-basement, where it supports a stone flagged
floor suggestive of a fireproof construction. There is evidence of a similar system on the
ground-floor amidst sub-divisions. Later panelling to staircase; the stair from first floor to attic
is of iron with an iron stick balustrade incorporating tiny volutes.
