25.9.51 Statue of Mrs Siddons.

Statue. Unveiled 1897. By L J Chavalliaud. White marble statue on Portland
stone pedestal. The statue depicts Mrs Sarah Siddons (1755-1831), the great
tragic actress, and is based on Sir Joshua Reynolds' painting of her entitled "The
Tragic Muse". She is dressed in classical costume and seated in dramatic
attitude with a dagger in her right hand.
