20.6.73 The Berners Hotel

Hotel. 1908-10 by John Slater (1847-1924). Surveyor to the Berners Estate. Red
brick and stone, slate roof. Heavy tall free classical design. 4 storeys, basement
and 2 tiers of dormers in mansard. Ground floor faced with channelled stone, has
large Doric portico off centre and arcaded windows with carved keystones. Red brick
upper floors have flat arched sash windows in stone architraves. Mutule cornice
above 3rd floor with balustraded parapet. The principal features of interest are the
interiors of the hall, dining room and staircase, on the ground floor elaborately
decorated in the Second Empire style and with Baroque plaster ceilings; the hall has
marble lined walls and marble chimneypiece.
