Built in 1734 by George Manners one of the younger sons of the Dukes of Rutland.
Architect unknown. Rainwater head dated 1751. Traditionally said to be on
site of Uphall which was known as the manor of Ufford in C15 and C16. It
is a mansion now divided into flats.
West garden front: ashlar with rusticated quoins. 2:1:3:1:2 bays. Centre
5 bays 3 storeys, the centre 3 bays pedimented and rusticated to ground and
first floors. Cornice over first floor with balustrade over. Flanking 2
storey 2 bay wings. Sashes with glazing bars in moulded stone architraves,
some with keyblocks, central doorway with voussoired flat arch and ornately
traceried rectangular fanlight, and glazed door.
Entrance front facing the road to the east: rusticated quoins, dentilled
cornice and blocking course. Three storeys and basement, 3 bays ground and
first floor project with splayed angles and a splayed central 2 storey and
attic stair tower at the centre with pedimented porch with Tuscan columns
and semi-circular fanlight and a round arched first floor window with lunette
above. Flanking 2 storey and basement 2 bay wings. Slate hipped roofs.
Ashlar stacks, panelled and with cornices.
Interiors although divided into flats the principal rooms remain intact.
Drawing room and dining room in the wings have good C18 marble chimney pieces.
Hall has plaster ceiling with running vine decoration and frieze. Cantilevered
geometric staircase in centre bay at front, C19 cast iron balusters.
