3/73 Lychgate at Aston Burial

War Memorial lychgate. c.1919. Timber framed on brick base with a
slate roof. Side walls with double gates between. Road front: corner
posts of cross section. The jowled tops are inscribed at left 1914,
at right 1918 supporting a cambered tie-beam which is inscribed IN
MEMORY OF THE FALLEN HEROES OF THE GREAT WAR. S-shaped braces above
and decorated bargeboards. Rear: similar, the bressumer inscribed
UNRIGHTEOUS TO FORGET and the inner face inscribed THEY DIED THAT WE
MIGHT LIVE. Also inside at left and right are wooden tablets above
the brick side walls, being that at left inscribed
BROOMHALL/SOUND/NEWHALL/SMEETON and then a list of 13 names. To the
right is a similar tablet inscribed REMEMBRANCE/DUTY/ PATRIOTISM/TRUTH
FREEDOM/FAITH/SACRIFICE/LOVE/IMMORTALITY. There are stone quoins to
the rear of the lower brick walls and a chamfered coping to the top.
