Description

TQ 2880 NW CITY OF WESTMINSTER GREEN STREET, W1
68/9
1.5.86 No. 10
- II
Terraced town house, 1893-95, by Balfour and Turner. Red brick and
stucco, slate roof. An individual Free Style design, with slightly
Jacobethan motifs, displaying the consistent quality and
inventiveness of this practice. 5 storeys and basement. 2 windows
wide. The ground floor has 2 semicircular arched openings, that to
right containing doorway and 2 light side-light, set in concave, stone
faced recess, imaginatively enriched with leaf ornament that screens
the tympanum and the left side-light; the left hand archway frames a 4-
light sash window. The 1st and 2nd floors have a pair of through
storey canted oriels, capped and linked by a balcony with decorative
iron railings in front of 3rd floor where the windows are set in
shallow panels with relieving arches. The front is finished off with
a gabled attic. Arts and Crafts cast iron area railings. Doorway
carving probably by Thackeray Turner's brother Laurence.
Survey of London; Vol. XL.
