Rawtenstall Cemetery

Community war memorial. Erected Sept. 1915, at the instigation of Councillor Carrie Whitehead, JP, of Rawtenstall, and made by Joseph Harling of Rawtenstall. Pale grey granite, with incised inscriptions. Square base of 3 steps, carrying a square die. Base and die are inscribed. Plain cross on square base of 2 steps. This is the earliest known community war memorial erected during World War I, and originally commemorated only the dead from two council wards in Rawtenstall.
