Headstone with grave slab. c1901. Granite headstone, stone
slab. Pointed arch headstone inscribed to the memory of Walter
Besant and his wife and quotation from Leigh Hunt, "Write as
one who loves his fellow-men"; plain grave slab with battered
kerbing. HISTORICAL NOTE: Sir Walter Besant was a novelist,
antiquarian, social reformer and long resident in Hampstead.
His socially-conscious novels prompted the establishment of
the People's Palace in Mile End; he also wrote a 10 volume
survey of London.
