Town Hall, now library and community arts centre. Originally "New
Swindon Local Board Offices". 1890-91 by Brightwen Binyon of Ipswich, built as
'new public offices building' for the New Town. Red brick with stone string courses
and slate roof. 2 storey attics, 9 bays. Gables over the 2 end bays.
Main entrance into 3rd bay under 24m clock tower; heavy Portland
stone round-headed arch over 5 steps, and paired fluted brackets
carrying balustrade. Stone cross windows, in end bays with moulded
brick panel and triangular brick pediment. Second entrance in 7th
bay; round arch within pilasters and pediment linking up 9-light
window over. Panel in right gable. Octagonal arcaded roof louvre
over 7th bay with spirelet and wrought iron finial. Clock tower
with gabled and bracketed clock face on all 4 sides. Cornice over
with square raised dome of lead with crowning louvre as on 7th bay.
Entrance similar on side elevation.
Interior: Hall with granite columns and open well stair with
balustrade of iron. 4-bay theatre with panelled barrel vault and
balcony.
