7/5 Burmington Manor
13/10/66 (Formerly listed as Manor
House)
GV II*
Manor house. Early C13 origins, with late medieval, late Cl6, C17, C18 and C19
alterations. C13 uncoursed limestone rubble, and later squared, coursed rubble
with plinth and quoins. Stone slate roof with ashlar ridge stack with moulded
base, the 4 flues linked by a moulded cornice. Further brick stacks, 2 with
original ashlar bases. 2 storeys plus attic; 3-window range. Originally a 2-bay
aisled hall with solar range to east. North facade of 3 flush gabled bays, that
to east the original solar bay. To centre of bay an early C13 blocked window of
2 round-headed lights under a round arch, the tympanum unpierced. Above, to
left, a Cl6 first-floor inserted window of 3 hollow moulded round-headed lights,
with hood mould and label stops. C16 timber-framed gable has decorative bracing.
2-bay range to centre and west has C16 timber studded first floor, and gables,
now weatherboarded. To ground floor a large C19 five-light wood casement.
Further C19 three-light casement inserted into first floor studding. C20
two-light casements in gables. Projecting north from-west bay a late C18
one-storey kitchen range with tile roof, and 3-light casement, and blocked
doorway to west, both with stone lintels with keyblocks. West facade, the gable
end of original hall range, has C18 doorway to left with stone lintel and
keyblock. C19 stone canted bay to centre. To first floor left a C19 two-light
casement, with a C17 ovolo-moulded 3-light mullioned window with hood mould and
label stops to centre, under original gable. To centre right, where C13 range
ended, a shallow buttress. To right, projecting south, a C19, two-storey gabled
range with possibly reset Oh window of 3, hollow-moulded, round-headed lights
with hood moulds and label stops to west and south. To south a further C19
projecting gable, with plank door and ovolo-moulded single stone light with hood
mould and label stops. To centre a C19 stone canted bay, with reset Clb window
above of 4, hollow-moulded, round-headed lights and hood mould with label stops.
To right a C19 one-storey porch with part-blocked, 4-centred, doorway, and
re-set ovolo-moulded light to right. East facade is east side of original solar,
extended to south C19. To left a C19 casement to each floor, with semi-circular
arch. To ground floor centre a 3-light, hollow-moulded mullioned window, with
C19 casement above, and to first floor right. C20 glazed and panelled door to
ground floor right. Interior: C13 hall range subdivided by first floor Cl6, and
by later walls. Originally an aisled hall of 2 bays, with timber arcades running
the length of the hall, with a one-bay arcade in each end wall. A further timber
arch crossed the centre of hall, between the 2 central piers. The building
possibly had a collar rafter roof and passing braces. A mutilated timber central
pier exists on ground floor and 3 corbels, only one of which is recognisably
intact. It has a stiff-leaf capital within trumpets. Remains of similar carving
on stone capital supporting the only surviving chamfered timber round arch.
Central pier of this arch has remains of C13 carving on timber capital. Cl6
plank floor remains (partly replaced) and Cl6 small-framed timber and plaster
partitions. Also, on first floor Cl6 plank door with fleur-de-lys strap hinges.
C16 four-centred stone fireplace with chamfered stone surround with broach stop.
On ground floor all stone flagged floors, and large open fireplace with timber
bressumer with ogee stops. Also 4-centred doorway, now plastered, probably C19,
with chamfered surround and ogee stops. Cl6 heavily moulded cross beams in floor
insertion of hall range. C16 wood mullioned window in gable now facing into C18
kitchen range. Also C18 plank and moulded rail door leading into kitchen range.
Further doors are 6-panelled, with some C19 plank doors. C19 staircases, one
breaking through C16 floor, in front of stone fireplace to first floor. Roof has
some C13 smoke-blackened timbers, re-used C16. Also moulded spine beam, cut
lengthways, re-used as principal rafters in one truss in C17, with C17 stone
beam in its place in first floor ceiling. Tenoned purlins. C16 roof over solar
of 2 bays, with 2 queen post trusses. One tie beam is C16 heavily moulded beam,
possibly cut and reset, or simply boxed in by later first floor ceiling. C16
attic staircase. The baluster with finial and rail remain.
