14/6/54 Old Assembly Rooms

Assembly Rooms. 1774-6 by William Newton; financed by public subscription. Sand-
stone ashlar; Welsh slate roof. Classical style. 3-storey, 3-bay centre and 2-
storey, one-bay wings. Circa 1900 rearrangement of entrance has doors flanking
centre bay in rusticated ground floor. Giant Ionic Order (capitals after the
Erectheion), paired at ends, and pediment to main block. First floor centre
window round-headed, side windows pedimented, all in architraves; smaller second-
floor sashes. Sash windows with glazing bars in plain reveals, the upper in
arched recesses, in wings. Floor bands; impost bands to wings. Hipped roofs on
wings. Interior shows classical decorative work of high quality in main rooms of
both floors, with sensitive use of Orders and delicate ceiling plasterwork;
carved chimney-pieces and enriched doorcases.
