Masonic hall. 1872 datestone. By John Paul. Polychrome front
with faced rubble and freestone, granite and terracotta
details; dry Delabole slate roof with stone stack with brick
quoins and moulded cornice on right. Deep plan. Venetian
Gothic style. 2 storeys; 4-window range. Stilted round-headed
1st-floor windows with coloured glass; nook shafts; slender
hoodmoulds and keyblocks; 2 medallion heads to outer
spandrels, datestone to central spandrel; eaves entablature
with lozenges and consoles. Ground floor has segmental-arched
openings; doorway with nook shafts and open pediment with
Masonic symbols, 6-panel door with 3 arched top panels and
pair of windows towards right with 4-pane horned sashes and
tall keyblocks through slender hoodmoulds; mid-floor arcaded
and moulded frieze. INTERIOR of ground floor altered C20. A
fine and richly-detailed example, clearly influenced by
Ruskin.
