Tomb. Circa 1864. Granite and sandstone. Stepped base of sandstone and grey
granite carries tapered grave slab, with plinth, cornice and pediment, of
pink granite. Inscribed 'SHORTER HOURS AND BETTER EDUCATION FOR MINERS'.
Erected by the miners of Northumberland and Durham to the memory of
Thomas Hepburn,. founder of the first successful miners' union in the
