16.3.70 Remains of Town Walls

Remains of Town Walls. Foundations possibly of pre-Conquest date, with C13 and
C14 town walls above. These in turn in part surmounted by C18 & C19 walls,
restored in C20. Brick and flint, banded with brick in part, rebuilt in
part in red brick. Circa 20-30 feet high, 50 yards long to the north from the
rear of the High Street and then 100 yards along the side of the Castle site
to Castle Lane.
