House, now 3 dwellings. Late C16, added to C17 or C18, altered C19 and C20.
Timber frame, No 72s of thinner scantling, with some painted wattle and daub
infill (to No 68), and some later brick infill; partially replaced by brick, and
front roughcast-plastered. Plain tile roof. 2 storeys. No 72 a single-cell
addition to pre-existing house (Nos 68 and 70) of 3 bays with smoke bay which
has 4 first-floor windows. From left: No 72 has a board door under bracketed
hood on right; a wide, small-pane, C20 window to left with an 8-pane side-
sliding sash above which rises, above eaves, as a tile-hung, gabled, dormer
window. No 70 has similar door to right of 3-light window with windows of 2, 4
and Z lights to first floor, all lights 2-paned, and the 4-light window having
central side-sliding sash. No 68 has a 4-panel door in an open, gabled, timber
porch with an 8-pane, 2-light window to right on each floor. Half-hipped roof,
right hip with gablet. Rebuilt end stack to right. Rear: late C20 brick
addition to Nos 68 and 70 not of special interest, but to either side of it the
timber frame is visible, having wall posts with arched braces down to mid-rail.
Interiors of Nos 68 and 70: more of the timber frame visible, including original
end and partition walls of large square panels (in No 70), unjowled posts, stop-
chamfered spine-beams, square-sectioned joists, some broad floor boards, and
queen-post roof trusses with clasped purlins and square-sectioned rafters. The
stair in No 70 is possibly inserted in what was originally a cross-passage.
