Stable court to Somerleyton Hall. Dated 1846 on rainwater heads; by John
Thomas for Sir Morton Peto. Red brick with stone dressings. Slated roofs.
Jacobean style. Mainly 2 storeys. At the south end is the entrance block
with a semi-circular headed archway and a square clock tower above. Clock
faces on 4 sides, with pierced angle turrets capped by obelisk finials
between. Above rises an octagonal bell tower with strapwork-traceried
openings and a domed cupola with scaled roof: this is surmounted by a finial
and wind vane. The clock is by Vulliamy. 2 similar ranges of coach houses
and stabling with living accommodation above, both with shaped gables.
Attached to the north is a lower enclosing block in matching style. The east
range has 4 slightly recessed semi-circular arches to the ground floor, with
stone panelling in the tympana; one arch contains a doorway. A further arch
in the centre gable is taller and narrower and contains a window. 3 first
floor windows, one of them circular. The courtyard openings are largely
unaltered. The surrounding park and gardens are included in the HBMC County
Register of Gardens at Grade II*.
