Ash Farmhouse

Farmhouse. Late C16 with considerable C18 and C19 alterations and additions.
Mainly red brick, partly timber frame core; remains of stucco render to the
south facade. Roof of glazed black pantiles. 2 storeys and attic. The older
ranges have an L shape plan, with C19 additions within the angle to the west.
The main feature is the south facade which has a crowstepped gable end with 3
original window openings, diminishing in size upwards, and 2 futher windows in
the section adjoining. The openings have moulded brick and stucco pediments.
All the windows are later, smaller insertions. Moulded string course at first
floor level. Between the 2 ground floor windows is a later pedimented doorway
with inset 6-panel door (the upper 4 panels glazed). To the west gable end is
an original external stack with 3 grouped flues rising from a moulded base;
the caps are missing. The east side of the north range was re-fronted in mid
C19: casement windows under yellow brick segmental arches; 2 6-panel doors.
There is a large external stack at the south end, perhaps an earlier one
rebuilt. The dog-leg stair (apparently rebuilt) incorporates C16-C17 turned
balustrading and newel posts with acorn finials. Some original internal
doors.
