House. Circa 1830-35 remodelling and enlargement of circa C18 house,
with later C19 additions. Gault brick Flemish bond front and sides and
red brick at rear. Slate hipped roof with lead rolls to hips and ridge
and brick dentil eaves. Gault brick axial stacks. Plan: 3-room plan
front range, the centre and left rooms now one, and with stair hall
between centre and right-hand rooms. The circa 1830-35 remodelling
probably involved the addition or extension of the 2-storey rear
outshut with a study to the right and kitchen to left with back stairs
and pantry between; the left end of the outshut appears to have been
raised later in C19. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4-window east
front. C19 sashes 4 over 8 panes on first floor, 16 panes on ground
floor with flush panel shutters and flat rubbed brick arches. Doorway
to right of centre with moulded doorcase with open pediment on
brackets, rectangular fanlight with intersecting glazing bars and
reeded transom and C19 flush panel door. C19 sash windows with glazing
bars at either end; casement windows at rear. Interior: Most of the
C19 joinery survives, including mahogany chimneypiece in centre room
with quatrefoils, shields and cusped panels and iron grate; panelled
cupboard and bookshelves in study; large kitchen fireplace with
bracketed shelf; staircase with stick balusters and moulded hand-rail
ramped up to column newels, small C19 wooden chimneypieces in chambers
and panelled doors.
