Thatched Cottage & The Thumb Bit
GV
II
House, divided into 2. Early C17. Timber framed, with old comb-pargetted
render. Thatched roof, hipped on right, gabled on left. 1½ storeys. One
internal chimney stack with a large plain shaft of old brick, and an end
stack, set externally on the left, with old brick laid in English Bond to the
lower courses. One square-headed dormer with a 2-light casement window;
horizontal glazing bars to lights. To the left of the internal stack one 3-
light C20 metal casement window and one 2-light casement window with 6 panes
to each light. To the right of the stack, one 2-light and one single light
window, both casements, with 6-pane lights. Half-glazed C20 door in a lobby-
entrance position. Thatched Cottage has only one ground floor room with plain
joists set flat; no other timbering visible. The Thumb Bit (to right of
stack) has plain joists set flat on the ground floor, and a main beam set on
edge, which may indicate that there was a smoke-bay before the brick chimney.
The present fireplace is C20, built forward from the face of the stack. On
the upper floor, one tie-beam removed. In the gable end, housings for 2
adjacent 4-light diamond-mullioned windows. Exposed roof with clasped
purlins. A single storey red brick lean-to along the whole rear.
