5/113 The Ivies
- II
House. C16 parlour cell; the remainder probably first half of C17 and
replacing medieval work. Timber framed and plastered; service end is rebuilt
in brick on ground floor, part plastered over. Thatched roof, half-hipped to
the right. 2 storeys and attic. 3-cell form. 3 windows, C19 and mid C20
casements, mostly without glazing bars. Mid C20 door. Internal stack with
C20 common brick shaft. Parlour has axial bridging beam and chamfered joists;
the chamber above has some good studding with substantial reverse-curved
braces. Roof over parlour cell has one row of clasped purlins with large
arched wind braces. The hall and service end are not so heavily framed; there
is a queen-post roof of light construction (not examined in detail). The hall
has a chamfered-joist ceiling, the joists in the lower bay mostly replaced mid
C20 by others brought from elsewhere. Irregular plain joists at service end.
The service cell and half of the hall chamber are divided off from the rest of
the house with a separate access. C16-C17 newel stair beside stack, the upper
flight added when the attic was made.
