C17 timber-framed house with gabled plain tile roof. Two-storeys and attic.
South-east front the 2 wide gabled bays and the gable ends (dated 1614 and 1630)
of parallel ranges, the right hand set back. First and second floor jettied on
moulded bressummers. Ground storey close vertical studding, first storey diagonal
studding. Two and 3-light moulded shallow oriels on carved brackets with carved
arcaded panels beneath first storey windows. Modern glazed door off centre with open
wooden porch. Much of the timber framing on this side has been rebuilt.
South-west side 3-bays, first floor jettied similar windows on console brackets.
Rear (north-west) gabled and jettied on carved brackets right-hand projects, left-
hand corner post with cable moulding.
Interior: Ground floor room has remarkable early C17 moulded plaster ceiling in
3 parts divided by plastered beams and with moulded surrounds and pendants, ornamented
with heraldic devices, animals, pomegranates etc, and figure said to be of James I
in wall. Stone chimney piece with ovolo moulded chamfer to Tudar arch. Panelling
with fluted frieze. Adjoining room has moulded plaster frieze and chamfered chimney
bressummer. Another ground floor room has chamfered chimney bressummer and ceiling
beams with stops.
Arleston Manor was formerly a hunting seat of the Lords Forester and according to
local tradition built as a hunting lodge for James I.
