A fine C16 timber-framed and plastered building with a cross wing at
the north end and 2 cross wings at the south end. Roof tiled. 2 storeys.
The upper storey is jettied on exposed joists and curved brackets with
the remains of shafts and capitals. The north end is partly underbuilt
with 2 C18 bays and there is an C18 doorway. The upper storey and gables
to the cross wings have exposed timber-framing. The 2 gables on the
south have fine bressumers projecting on the front, billet moulded and
carved and some Tudor roses. Six window range of casements on the upper
storey. The ground storey has an C18 bow oriel window with glazing bards
at the north end, a splayed bay and an 8-panel door with semi-circular
fanlight. The south end has a 6-light mullioned and transomed oriel
window. The north cross wing has a ridge chimney stack with tile moulded
banes of 3 octagonal shafts. The interior has many original features
including carved and moulded beams, panelling etc. This house was purchased
in 1647 as a grammar school and was closed in 1887. Among its pupils
were John Constable, RA and Arthur Young.
