Harwood Family Tomb
Cast iron railings with slate panels, on a slate base. C.1860. Moulded corner posts an lesser uprights, linked with X-shaped rails in the manner of Roman domestic ironwork. The moulded top rail could be unscrewed in order for slate inscription panels to be inserted between the uprights: five such panels have been inserted at one end.
HISTORY: the earliest inscription commemorated Florence Harwood (d.1859, aet. 14): her epitaph reads: Ere sin could blight of sorrow fade / Death came with friendly care / The opening bud to Heaven conveyed / And bade it blossom there. This memorial employed an unusual industrially produced assembly system, capable of adjustment to receive later inscriptions, and is listed on account of this.
