House, divided into two dwellings. Early C17 with late C19 alterations and
additions. Timber-framed with rendered infill and plain tiled roof. Four
framed bays aligned north/south; central two-bay hall has former through-
passage and large chimney between upper and parlour bay with six diagonal
C19 stacks; also external sandstone chimney to rear service bay with C19
stack. Two storeys. Framing: four panels from sill to wall-plate with
short straight braces in upper corners; north gable end has small ogee braces
in upper corners; collar and tie-beam trusses with two collars; south gable
end has two struts to lower collar and raking struts across the lower corners
and one central strut to the upper collar; north gable end has three struts
to the lower and two to the upper collar, a concave V-strut in the apex and
decorative concave struts in the corners above the tie-beam and lower collar.
East front elevation: irregular fenestration; ground floor has three 2-light
casements, two of which are set beneath a plank weathering, a 3-light casement
and two rectangular lights with cambered heads flanking the entrance; first
floor has three 2-light casements and a 3-light casement; door in through-
passage position is ledged and battened with a plank weathering; two brick
buttresses support left bay. Interior: ground floor of north bay has two
lateral main beams which are chamfered with 5-bar stops; room above has
scrolled and latticed painted decoration on main beam. A two-bay late C19
wing adjoins north bay at rear; the main entrance to Church Cottage is
situated in its north elevation. Also C20 single-storey addition at rear
centre. The building has been planned so that its upper bay with its
decorative gable end is closest to the church.
