4/4 The Farmhouse

Farmhouse. Early C17 with late Cl7, late C18 and mid-C19 alterations
and additions. Sandstone rubble and brick with some ashlar dressings
and slate roofs large Cl7 brick ridge stack with three combined octagonal
shafts and also C18 brick stack at west end. Original part of T-plan with
hall part aligned north/south and cross-wing at south end, with large central
chimney forming lobby. There was an addition to the north-east in the late
Cl7 and in the C18 a two-bay extension was added to the west end of the cross-
wing: Two storeys, and cellar. South front two plus three bays. Windows
all have rusticated lintels. Original three-bay part has 3-light multi-paned
metal casements with transoms on both floors of the outer bays; the central
first floor window is boarded up. The central entrance has a ledged and
battened door. The two-bay addition has a 12-pane ground floor sash window
and a 9-pane and a 6-pane first floor sash window. The present main entrance
in the second bay has a C18 doorcase with entablature and pilastered surround,
flush-panelled reveals, a door with six flush panels and a transom light with
three glazing bars. There is a lean-to addition with a 2-light casement at
the east end. Interior: noted as having some exposed ceiling beams and back-
to-back fireplaces in original part. (RCHM, Herefs, Vol III, p 9).
