4/6 Lower Drayton Old Farmhouse

Farmhouse. C15, extended C16, partly rebuilt early C18 and late C18, restored
1980's. Timber-frame clad in coursed rubble with some late brick cladding and
tile roof. T-plan, cross-wing aligned north-east/south-west of C16, other
range to north-west C15 of three bays with later additions to north. External
brick stack to southern gable of cross-wing with two square-plan brick shafts
linked at top, rising from a dog-tooth cornice. Also a stack between first
and second bays of rear wing. South-east front: early C18 rubble to left,
late C18 brick to right. Two storeys with attic lit by two gabled dormers,
1 + 2 windows, a 3-light casement to left, others are 2-light casements under
segmental heads. Ground floor similar with a French casement under segmental
head between two windows to right. Main entrance is in the south-west front
of rear wing with a plain wooden architrave. The northern end of wing has a
stable with granary approached by an external staircase. Interior: the rear
wing contains three crucks with evidence of a former open hall. The inserted
stack has a large inglenook fireplace and ceiling beam with chamfers and stops.
Staircase at the junction of the two ranges has late C17 to early C18 splat
balusters. The cross-wing incorporates the remains of a C16 framed cross-
wing, including chamfered and stopped ceiling beams.
