Description

SHOBDON
SO 46 SW SHOBDON PARK

5/59 Garden Temple about 500
metres east of Church of
St John the Evangelist

GV II*

Garden temple. Probably c1750 for the 2nd Viscount Bateman, architect unknown. Yellow limestone (perhaps Bath) ashlar over Pennant stone steps; sandstone rubble and red brick rear wall; timber underside or roof; upper roof covered with corrugated iron at time of inspection. Tetrastyle prostyle temple, with four Ionic columns, splayed and with no mouldings at base. Pennant stone floor and steps (some missing) over foundations with brick arches. The architrave is enriched and the pulvinated frieze is decorated with a running foliage design flanking a central winged cherub's head. The centre of the pediment is enriched with modillions, six-leaved flowers on the soffit, and egg and dart mouldings, as is the principal cornice. The rear wall, with two Ionic pilasters, retains traces of render. Part of the notable improvements carried out a Shobdon Park around 1750 for the 2nd Viscount Bateman, and a structure possessed of considerable interest in terms of its unusual interpretation of the Ionic order. Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England (English Heritage), Part 20 Hereford and Worcester.
