Early C19. Said to have been named after Merton Place in Surrey and to
have beeen frequented by Lady Hamilton and Nelson. Tradition not confirmed.
2 storeys, hipped slate roof, rather flat. 3 sash windows with projecting
sills. In front, flanking l-storey wings with flat roofs and large round-headed
windows. At rear, balcony at 1st floor with iron railings and French windows.
French windows on ground floor with Venetian shutters. 2 of the rooms inside
have ceilings divided into panels by small moulded wooden strings. In one
of the rooms there are heraldic shields at the joints. These are said to
have been brought from Surrey.
