Leigh Court Barn
(Formerly listed as Cruck Barn, Leigh Court)
GV
I
Barn. Probably C14. Cruck-framed with weatherboarded walls and tile roof. South-east wall has two gabled porches. Main roof half-hipped. Two cart entrances in north-west wall. Some studwork is exposed externally, mostly with brick infill. Some original wattle-and-daub infill remains on north side. Interior: ten bays. Each cruck truss has an arch-braced collar with struts in the spandrels, and the tops of the blades joined by a yoke. These carry the ridge, either directly or by means of a vertical post. The two tiers of wind-braces on each side have curved wind-braces. Each porch has two cruck trusses.
The barn, with a length of 140 feet, and trusses nearly 33 feet high, spanning 34 feet, is the largest cruck building in the country. Radiocarbon dating, although not conclusive, suggests that the building is C14, with a date of c1325 likely. (Charles, FWB and Horn, W: "The Cruck-Built Barn of Leigh Court, Worcestershire, England", Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, March 1973, Vol XXXII, no 1). Scheduled Ancient Monument, County number 308.
