House. C16. Timber-framing with brick infill on stone plinth with tile roof.
Timber-framed part of house built in one long range on site sloping from south
to north, with plinth becoming cellar wall at northern end. Framed in square
panels, with part of the wall replaced by brick. Three C20 metal casements
on ground floor and four on first floor. Doors to right of first window and
at right. Roof half-hipped at left and hipped at right. Chimneys to right
of left-hand wall and to right of third window, the latter forward of the
ridge. Between the tie-beam and the collar of the left-hand gable wall are two
curved struts and a king-strut. Interior: first floor removed from right-hand
end of house. The two roof trusses visible have tie-beams moulded with hollow
chamfers and a roll, collars, and raking struts. The wind-braces are curved.
At first floor level a blocked doorway with Tudor arch opened into a rear lean-
to, probably once a stair projection. A blocked doorway in the partition wall
has a depressed ogee head. The roof over the northern part of the house was
not fully accessible at time of survey (May 1986), but the trusses visible
appeared to be similar to the others, suggesting that the main range is of one
build.
