Former school. Founded in 1540 by Sir Rowland Morton, present building
dates from C17 with substantial late C19 brick reconstruction to east side.
Timber-frame with brick infill and brick refacing, sandstone plinth, slate
roof. Four framed bays aligned north/south with north end adjoining gate-
house (qv), lateral stack to east side, entrance in northern end of east
side. East side, two large C19 windows with six divisions flank stack,
ledged door to right. Framing revealed to west, three square panels from
sill to wall-plate. The school occupies a prominent position facing the
churchyard. (RCHM Vol II, p 20, item 5).
