Lock on River Lugg
5/56 toward confluence with
Wye NGR 569375
- II
Pound lock. Possibly early C18. Stone walls of lock chamber flank banks
of River Lugg with traces of position of lower lock gate. In poor condition
but an interesting survival of the navigation of the Lugg. Permission to
navigate the Wye and Lugg as far as Leominster was given by Act of Parliament
to Sir William Sandys in 1662. (Nancy Richards: A Brief History of the
Navigation of the Rivers Wye and Lugg, 1969, Hereford City Library; John Lloyd:
Papers relating to the history and navigation of the Rivers Wye and Lugg, 1873,
Hereford City Library, Pilly Collection; Hereford City Quarter Sessions Order
Order Book Q/SO/1 & 2, Hereford Record Office).
